Health & Safety Policy — Gardeners Yeading

Gardener team preparing tools for safe gardening work Policy statement: Gardeners Yeading is committed to protecting the health, safety and welfare of all staff, contractors and the public while delivering quality gardening and grounds maintenance services. This policy sets out our approach to identifying hazards, controlling risks and maintaining safe working systems across all Yeading gardening services. The policy applies to all employees, subcontractors and visitors while working on client premises or public land.

Scope and objectives: The objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, minimise environmental impact and ensure consistent safe working practices. We will achieve this through hazard identification, regular training, correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe equipment operation and clear communication. These actions apply whether the work involves routine garden maintenance, tree care or landscaping projects across our service area.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day enforcement, risk assessments and ensuring staff follow safe systems. All staff, including Yeading gardeners, must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others, report hazards or incidents promptly and cooperate with any reasonable safety instruction.

Risk assessment and control

Before any task begins a suitable and sufficient risk assessment will be completed. The assessment will identify hazards such as sharp tools, moving machinery, hazardous substances, manual handling and working at height. Controls will be implemented following the hierarchy of controls: eliminate, substitute, engineer, administrate and use PPE as a last resort. Controls will be reviewed whenever working conditions change.

Worker wearing protective gear using gardening equipment Common hazards and controls: Typical hazards encountered by gardeners in Yeading include slips, trips and falls, cuts from hand tools, entanglement with powered equipment, noise and vibration exposure, UV exposure, and chemical risks from pesticides or fertilisers. Controls include safe tool selection, guarding, regular maintenance, appropriate PPE, signage and exclusion zones for powered equipment.

Safe systems of work

Team leaders will ensure written safe systems are in place for higher risk activities such as tree work, hedge cutting, use of chainsaws and powered lawn mowers, and transporting materials. These systems will include pre-use equipment checks, method statements, permit-to-work where needed and emergency arrangements. All employees must follow these procedures without exception.

Training and competence: We will ensure staff receive appropriate induction, task-specific training and refresher training. Training covers manual handling techniques, correct PPE use, chemical handling and disposal, safe operation of machinery, and first-aid awareness. Competence will be assessed and documented; newly hired team members will be supervised until deemed competent by a qualified supervisor.

Supervisor briefing gardeners on safety procedures PPE and equipment: Appropriate PPE including gloves, eye protection, ear protection, high-visibility clothing and protective footwear will be supplied and maintained. Equipment will be inspected before use and serviced at recommended intervals. Defective equipment must be taken out of use immediately and reported. Where specialised equipment is required, only trained personnel will operate it.

Subcontractors and visitors: All subcontractors and temporary staff working with the Yeading landscaping team must provide evidence of competence, insurance and their own safety arrangements. Visitors and clients on site must be given appropriate safety briefings and supervised where necessary. Contractors will be expected to cooperate with site-specific rules and any reasonable instructions from our supervisors.

Incident reporting and emergency procedures: All incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported immediately to a supervisor. Incidents will be investigated to identify root causes and preventive measures. Emergency procedures for medical incidents, fire, spill response and severe weather will be communicated to all staff and rehearsed periodically. First-aid kits and emergency contact procedures will be available at all worksites.

Performance indicators will be reviewed regularly and safety objectives updated to drive continual improvement. This policy will be reviewed at least annually and revised as necessary to reflect changes in work activities, equipment, legislation or industry best practice.

Commitment and compliance: By fostering a positive safety culture where every team member is empowered to act, Gardeners Yeading and associated teams commit to reducing harm and protecting the environment in the delivery of gardening and grounds care. Compliance with this policy is a condition of employment and service delivery; non-compliance will lead to corrective action. Our approach balances practicality with robust controls to keep staff, clients and the public safe while delivering reliable garden services in Yeading and neighbouring areas.
